Kirkwood Cricket Club, who play at (and under the name of) Dalton in the D&G Mid Week Cricket and having already secured joint top spot (with Dumfries Colts) at the end of the league’s season, played St Michaels in the “cup final” on Wednesday night.
Dalton batted first and just about everyone contributed: Yash Dhiman made 13; Campbell Potts 27; Robert McBride 17 and Tommy McGrath 33 as a steady total was accumulated. Averaging around 6 runs an over, but pinned down a bit towards the end of their 20 overs, Dalton reached a fair total of 132 on the board for 7 wickets down. The St Michaels fielding was excellent with some outstanding catches by Naimh Muir, (who also bowled neatly), Kieran Moore, and Ross Dalling; they were aided by some good bowling by Farouq and Harry Wharton.
And it was Farouq who who set the St Michaels reply alight, with some ferocious batting to notch up 39 runs himself after only 7 overs and sharing an opening stand of 62 with Ross McLeod. At this point St Michaels looked cruising to victory; but Jamie Buchanan-Jardine, Dalton’s skipper for the night, brought himself on to bowl and dismissed first Farouq, then Duncan Muir for a first ball duck. This altered the whole game. St Michaels slumped to 65 for 4 and never really recovered despite some resilience from Kevin Reagan and Kieran Moore. Ultimately St Michaels reached 105 for 8 at the end of their 20 overs and Dalton had triumphed by 27 runs.
Dalton is a tiny village with just 17 houses, so the Kirkwood Cricket Club welcomes players from all around the region and anyone wanting to play this or next season, at league or friendlies can phone 01576 510200 or email PlayCricket@Kirkwood-Lockerbie.co.uk
