Patience is a virtue, as they say. If so, Wynton Bernard might be the most virtuous person in sports. 10-years ago, the then 21-year-old was selected in the 35th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the San Diego Padres. However, far from leading to a glorious career at the game’s top level, it was the start of what seemed like an interminable wait for his dream to come true.
Instead of playing in the Majors, Bernard spent an entire decade on the fringes, and even dropped out of American ball altogether. Three seasons in the Padres’ minor league system were followed by stints in the minors for Detroit, San Francisco, and the Chicago Cubs. He even went to the Mexican Winter League, the Venezuelan Winter League, and the Australian Baseball League hoping to enhance his stats and reputation in order to get noticed by a Major League Baseball club.
Backing him all the way was his mom. But even she must have wondered if the Major League spotlight would ever shine on her son. It finally did!
Watch the moment Wynton Bernard is finally able to tell his mom he’s a Major League baseball player.
Since seeing Bernard during batting practice in the winter of 2020, Colorado manager, Bud Black, had kept him in mind for a potential place on the Rockies’ roster. And finally, this month, the Rockies picked up his contract, signing him from the Triple-A team, Albuquerque.
So it was that after sharing the incredible news with his mom, Bernard went on to face the Arizona Diamondbacks in the opener of a three-game series in which he batted eighth and played center field. What’s more, he ended the game as a winner, finishing with a single, a stolen base, and one run scored in a 5-3 Rockies’ win.
What’s that saying? Everything comes to those who wait.
