What will be allowed in Belgium?
Only one week until Formula 1 returns to the grid at Spa-Francorchamps. Many fans are expected at the traditional track, but the circuit has now issued some rules for spectators.
This year, negative incidents happened at the Austrian race track, involving so-called fans cheering when a driver hit the barriers, women being harassed, and plumes of orange smoke fogging the track. After the race, fans stormed onto the track and illegally took some signs (Rolex ads, DRS, distance signs, etc.) as souvenirs.
Formula 1 has made it clear: we don’t want that.
Hardly anyone expected that the implementation would happen so quickly.
The operators of the Spa Grand Prix announced yesterday:
In addition to (actually) logical bans such as “glass”, “weapons”, and “pets” (except for assistance animals and Roscoe, Lewis Hamilton’s dog), the circuit is going one step further.
The Spa Grand Prix operators also declare “no alcohol” and “no smoke bombs or rockets” in their Instagram post.
The partially new rules are intended to ensure that the race in Belgium is a positive experience for everyone:
“You are the key to a successful Grand Prix! Just follow the rules on site and have fun doing it.”

Of course, we cannot provide 100% proof that implementing a “dry” race regarding alcohol in Spa is due to the incidents in Austria, but the assumption is obvious.
Interestingly, other race tracks, also in Europe, follow this tactic. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain has not sold alcohol for years. Spectators can purchase only non-alcoholic beer at the circuit.
We are curious to see whether the rules are enforced and whether all fans adhere to them. It would be desirable that the experiences from Austria are not repeated in Spa.
