As Mora points out, the big fights generally don’t happen during the ideal time when both fighters are performing at the top of their game.
What we see is the fights are made when one guy is coming off a loss or has gotten old. Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin is a good example of that. Canelo didn’t fight Golovkin until he turned 36, and was coming off a bad performance against Kell Brook.
Ryan Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) hasn’t fought anyone remotely as good as Tank Davis, and it seems like a bad time to make a fight between the two.
“Yeah, I’ve worked on both sides, and both sides usually think they’re right and for good reason. They put on big shows, and they’ve got big brains on both sides,” said Sergio Mora to Fighthype when asked if the Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia fight will happen.
“There are a lot of hurdles to jump, and I just don’t think that the politics allow it. And if it does, and for some reason happens, it’s not going to happen soon. That’s probably one of the biggest fights in boxing as far as the mainstream in popularity with the younger viewers.
“It’s so much money on the table, but when you have to jump so many hurdles and cross so many Ts, and dot Is. The headaches and too many egos involved. I just don’t think [we’re going to see it]. Boxing shoots itself in the foot all the time. I don’t think it happens.
“Forget the social media following. That’s another thing that I don’t understand, but I do understand speed, I understand power, I understand putting butts in seats, and I understand that they have two different fan bases.
“When you bring those two different fan bases under one roof, it’s explosive; it’s exciting. It’s everything that boxing lives for. When it finally happens, it produces magic. All through history, it produces magic when you get two complete opposites stepping into the ring with unblemished records and a huge following. That’s magic. That’s boxing.
“As we’ve seen in recent years, it never happens when it should. It never happens at the ideal moment when it should happen. It always happens when one takes a loss or the other is a little bit older, and the magic has fizzled,” said Mora.
