Welcome back to Williamsport, Phillies. The Philadelphia Phillies will be playing in the 2023 MLB Little League Classic against the Washington Nationals at Bowman Field, it was announced on Sunday night during the MLB Little League Classic game between Boston and Baltimore.
That game next summer will take place on Aug. 20 as part of ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.
The Phillies will be the second team to have played in the MLB Classic for a second time. The only other team is the Pittsburgh Pirates, who played in the inaugural 2017 Classic against St. Louis (won, 6-3) and the 2019 Classic against Chicago (lost, 7-1).
The Philadelphia Phillies last played in the Classic in 2018 when they fell to the New York Mets, 8-2.
This year’s MLB Little League Classic game between the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox was originally scheduled to take place in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the World Series and thus the Classic.
The 2023 MLB Little League Classic will be the sixth iteration of the game at Bowman Field. The first game between Pittsburgh and St. Louis was the highest attended with 2,596 spectators. This year’s game was attended by 2,467, the third-highest attended classic. The Cubs/Pirates game in 2019 had 2,503 in attendance.
