Lewis Hamilton has revealed he was ‘f****** with’ Formula 1 by joking about a secret piercing during the sport’s jewellery ban.
The Mercedes driver hit out at the FIA’s directive over homologated racewear at the start of the 2022 season, joining Sebastian Vettel in poking fun at the sudden enforcement of a long-standing rule.


Vettel wore pants over his race suit after drivers were warned they faced punishment for non fire-retardant underwear, while Hamilton conducted a press conference draped in rings and necklaces.
However, things soon turned serious when he was told he wouldn’t be able to race with his piercings, one of which was a nose stud that would need to be surgically removed.
The 37-year-old then sent the internet ablaze when he said: “I can’t remove at least two of them. One, I can’t really explain where it is.
But the seven-time world champion has now revealed this was all just a joke.
“I was just f****** with it,” he told Vanity Fair. “I don’t have any other piercings anywhere. But I love that there’s this thinking: ‘S***, has he got his balls pierced?’”
“I just put on as much as I could,” Hamilton said in regards to his jewellery-draped press conference after the directive was issued, and he was later granted an extension to have his stud removed.

Hamilton finally appeared without it in time for the British Grand Prix, but was far more sobering about a rule that’s existed since 2005, two years before his debut, but has only now been enforced.
“People love to have power,” he said. “And to enforce power.”
When asked if he felt targeted by the decision Hamilton continued: “I mean, yeah, because I’m the only one that has jewellery on, really.”
Hamilton is the only black driver to race in F1, and opened up on how difficult and alienating the experience had been entering motorsport as a child.


“I didn’t feel like I was welcome,” he said. “I didn’t feel like I was accepted. God knows how many of these drivers say: ‘This is not what a Formula 1 driver is. That’s not how you behave. This is not how you do it.
“Tattoos? No! A Formula 1 driver doesn’t have tattoos! A Formula 1 driver doesn’t have a personality – and piercings!’”
He continued: “Look, when I was at school, I was dyslexic and struggling like hell, and one of the only few black kids in my school, being put in the lowest classes and never given a chance to progress or even helped to progress.
“Teachers were telling me, ‘You’re never going to be nothing.’ I remember being behind the shed, in tears, like, ‘I’m not going to be anything.’ And believing it for a split second.

“[It was] the most demotivating thing to hear – especially when you witness them doing the complete opposite with your white counterparts. I don’t actually hold any grudge against those people, because they fueled me up.”
Motorsport quickly became an escape for Hamilton, and the rest was history, as he explained.
“Firstly, it’s like having a superpower,” he said. “I couldn’t be Superman, but that was like your cloak. When I got in the car, I put a helmet on, and I wasn’t seen any different.
“You can’t see my skin colour. You just see me as a driver. And I was able to do things that others weren’t able to do. And it didn’t matter how big the other kids were, I could still beat them.”
