By Vince D’Writer: In the co-main event of the Sebastian Fundora-Carlos Ocampo Showtime Boxing card, Interim WBC middleweight champion Carlos Adames defeated middleweight contender Juan Macias Montiel at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
The fans who were in attendance showed the boxers no mercy as they started booing at the midway point of the first round due to a lack of activity. Both boxers used the round as a feeling out process, but despite the fact that he did very little in the opening round, Adames won the round because Montiel failed to land a single punch.
In the second round, Adames set the tempo by consistently using his jab. Once he was able to establish the distance, the Dominican boxer Adames unleashed a diversified attack as he landed multiple shots upstairs and downstairs. Adames right hook started landing accurately as he easily won the second round.
The start of the third round was a repeat of round two as Adames used his jab and then he proceeded to move inside and land some effective combinations. Adames used a big right hook to knock Montiel off balance, and then he followed up with an eight punch combination that forced the referee to step in and stop the contest.
After the bout, the Dominican expressed his satisfaction in regards to his boxing performance. “I knew once I connected on that right hand I knew it was over. He didn’t have much and then I went in for the kill. He was done at that point,” Adames stated during his post fight interview.
Juan Macias Montiel (23-6-2, 23 KOs) came into the October 8 bout as man attempting to work his way back into the title picture. On June 2021 he had an opportunity to face Jermall Charlo, but he fell short as he loss by way of unanimous decision. His knockout defeat on Saturday night was the second time he was stopped inside the distance. The first time occured as a welterweight in 2017 when Jaime Munguia knocked Montiel out in the second round.
Since losing to Patrick Teixeira in 2019, Carlos Adames (22-1, 17 KOs) is on a four fight win streak, and he’s positioned himself to be the top contender to the WBC champion Jermall Charlo, but he’s open to fighting the other champions. “I think I’m number one, and let’s hope the big names of the division have the courage to face me now.”
The 28-year-old Adames and his trainer Bob Santos both agree that he’s ready to take his boxing career to the next level. He made a massive statement Saturday night, and he’s in position to fight Jermall Charlo, but Carlos Adames is also willing to step in the ring with WBA, IBF middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin or WBO middleweight champion Janibek Alimkhanuly.
